Picking Nits

The Wrigley clock and national anthem anachronisms; Hobbs never asks how old Iris's son is; Fowler's three-hitter throw job; gibberish newspaper copy and shifting dates; Roy's silver bullet, stomach lining and exploding-stomach medicine; Pop's lineup construction; nobody hears the gunshot in the owner's box; Roy never changes his name though he did nothing wrong

  • Time-frame issues: the Wrigley Field clock, and a national anthem sung before a game, which did not happen until after World War II.
  • Hobbs never puts two and two together about his son, asking 'your boy?' without the natural follow-up of how old he is.
  • Fowler, bribed to throw the last game, throws a three-hitter and makes one mistake in eight innings, when a pitcher could simply walk a bunch of dudes and give up a five-run inning.
  • The newspaper copy under the headlines is gibberish when frozen, and the dates go back and forth, making the timeline hard to follow, though the newspapers and magazine covers are loved as a gimmick.
  • Everything about Roy's internal organs is confounding: the bullet could not be removed after 72 hours in a coma yet comes out perfectly after the poisoning, the doctor warns his stomach could explode, and the blood at the end has no clear source beyond opened stitches; it is called completely illogical and a mess.
  • Pop's lineup construction is abhorrent: the slowest guy in the two spot, and a fourth outfielder subbed in to bat third in the playoff game when Roy is crossed out.
  • Nobody hears a gunshot in the owner's box before the game; Roy works to hide his past yet never changes his name, and the hosts cannot see what he did wrong, since Harriet killed three other people and jumped out a window, like being blamed for Ted Bundy's suicide.
  • Earlier, whether Max Mercy should have remembered Roy right away is dismissed as fine, while whether Roy could still pitch with the bullet in his side is parked for nits or unanswerable questions; pain tolerance and no Toradol are the offered answers.
  • Whether Roy would really bleed through his heavy fire-retardant uniform was flagged during research as a possible nitpick.

Picking Nits

A body double hired just to cover the president's affair; whether body doubles have ever really happened; Dave's temp agency during the five months; the confusing fall-to-fall timeline; the stroke never leaking; the hush payouts are far too low; the balcony security risk; the president and First Lady getting back into the White House; the everyone-gets-a-job program; why Bob didn't just let the VP take over; the First Lady turning around too quickly

  • A counterpoint argues there is no hole, the movie is perfect and the second best ever made; nit number one is that they found a body double so the president could carry on with a staffer when he could have done that anyway, since he comes in and out of her office multiple times.
  • On body doubles generally: a host thinks it has definitely happened in American history, before the internet or even the cable news era, recalling the Melania body double theory; others accept it may have happened for a diversion when someone was sick but never to this extent, and even Nixon's distinctive face would be hard to replicate.
  • What happened to Dave's temp agency during the five months he was president? Faith Prince was crushing it on the phones, and he had called to say he met a Polynesian gal and was going to Hawaii to get married, with 'she was amnesian' one of the stickiest lines in the movie; a host asks at what point anyone would wonder if they disappeared from the Ringer for five months, with a joke that Chris Connelly replaced Dave at the agency.
  • The timeline is confusing: it is fall when the movie starts and fall when it ends, yet the closing voiceover says the real president was in a coma for five months before he passed away, left intentionally ambiguous; and a lot of people knew about Mitchell's stroke coma, yet it never leaked and there were no rumors.
  • The payouts are extremely low, 50K, 50K, 100K and one doctor asking to head the CDC, as learned in the Alan and Bob Alexander conversation; the president having a stroke on top of his secretary would be a 5 million dollar National Enquirer scoop and the biggest story in the history of American politics, so you always need to ask for more.
  • Dave wandering the balcony as President Mitchell, looking out at the monuments, seems like a security concern with a sniper a mile away in some hotel; another host counters that roof and air rights around the White House are locked down and that on the factual television show Scandal the Truman Balcony is used constantly; the nit is waved off as not the biggest concern in a movie where a lookalike becomes president, and listeners are told to email.
  • The president and First Lady leave the White House and are simply let back in at the front gate, which is more unrealistic than leaving, since the guard can't know it's really them, and it certainly isn't him; bad security.
  • President Mitchell's jobs program, everyone who wants one gets a job, the Oprah plan with a direct comparison to FTR (as transcribed), is probably the most unrealistic part, since a real president saying that would be destroyed; the press laughs and is then won over by the 'look on somebody's face the day they finally get a job' speech, which is played, but Dave runs a temp agency and nobody sings from the rafters about a temp job, though the speech is moving and good acting.
  • Why wouldn't Bob just let the VP take over and bulldoze him? Because the boy scout might not keep him on as chief of staff; the random-temp-agency-stooge plan isn't really thought out, Bob just sees an opportunity after an unforeseen stroke, it's a bad plan, and Vice President Nance is a good and decent public servant who wouldn't suffer a devious fool like Bob Alexander in his administration.
  • Parked for nitpicks during the research block: the Sigourney Weaver character still turns around pretty quickly, one sandwich and she wants to keep the coup going, though a host defends it as falling for the sweet, decent version of the person you first loved who looks exactly like him; the real objection is less the attraction than her signing on to the illegal operation and pushing major legislation, while others point to the balanced budget, Ted Bundy's death-row romance, the shower, and how weird it would be to see a spouse of 30 years suddenly do a magic trick.

Hopkins mocked Foster's Southern accent in their first scene; James Gumm combines Ed Gein, Ted Bundy and Gary Hednick (as transcribed); Gene Siskel gave the film a negative review; Brooke Smith gained 25 pounds for Catherine Martin; Goodbye Horses replaced a Bob Seger song and Ted Levine insisted on the dance; Levine and Scott Glenn did extensive research; the story was inspired by Robert Keppel and Ted Bundy; William Goldman got Demme to cut a 12-minute Crawford-Clarice sequence

  • According to Jodie Foster, Hopkins improvised mocking her Southern accent during their first meeting, so her horrified reaction is genuine; the hosts love when good actors unsettle their scene partners, and the accent is called not great and one of several problems with her performance.
  • James Gumm ('Jame Gum' variously as transcribed) combines three real killers: Ed Gein, who skinned victims, Ted Bundy, who escaped and killed again, and Gary Hednick (as transcribed), who kept captives in a basement pit.
  • Gene Siskel gave the film a negative review, and one host calls Siskel the movie equivalent of the host's perpetual disagreements with Greenwald.
  • Brooke Smith, who played Catherine Martin, gained 25 pounds for her first major role, and the hosts wonder whether she deserved a supporting actress nomination.
  • The dance song Goodbye Horses by Q Lazarus was originally supposed to be a Bob Seger song, which one host is glad it was not; the hosts joke about how men their age would react if it came on in a bar.
  • Ted Levine insisted the dance scene be in the film, and the screenwriter did not know it would be until he saw it; it was improvised, Levine needed two drinks first, and he researched by visiting trans bars and talking to people.
  • Scott Glenn researched child murder cases and worked with the real-life model for Crawford, with tempestuous political arguments because Glenn opposed capital punishment; a host jokes that Glenn then murdered him.
  • The story was inspired by the relationship between University of Washington criminology professor and profiler Robert Keppel and Ted Bundy, which is how the Green River killer was caught.
  • The second host's research, from a Deadline oral history: after an LA screening, William Goldman told Demme to cut a filmed 12-minute sequence in which the attorney general chews out Crawford and Clarice, kicks her out of the academy and takes him off the case; Demme and the editor resisted, cut it anyway, and the film became a tight hour and 54 minutes.
  • Goldman is also credited with telling the Good Will Hunting writers to drop the second half where Will becomes a spy; the host found the Goldman story the most interesting, the Hackman material having been covered.
