The final basketball sequence is criticized for too much slow motion.
The soundtrack receives explicit support: one participant says they love it, and another says its funky approach resembling Midnight Run works and is enjoyable. — Chris Ryan
The lack of rap or hip-hop is called the biggest nitpick despite that support, with the music's 1992 mainstream context discussed.
Above the Rim is praised for using Big Pimpin' by Snoop and the Dog Pound, offered as an example of music belonging to its specific basketball era.
Black Sheep's The Choice Is Yours, early Tupac, Scenario, and PM Dawn are proposed in turn, with PM Dawn immediately resisted as music the characters would not hear.

Sidney's implausible basketball technique is called the number-one flaw, and the tournament is said to pass too quickly.

Sidney's $1,700 double-cross after losing $62 is considered excessive and makes at least one participant dislike him.
Wesley Snipes is praised as athletic but criticized as visibly not a basketball player; carrying the ball, theatrical moves, and slow-motion coverage are offered as evidence.
The tournament is said to go by too fast, reaching the final abruptly; one participant explicitly wants more tournament and less Gloria material.

The discussion moves from instinctive opposition to conditional support for a modernized remake, while an unlabeled line about not watching remains rhetorically ambiguous; Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Ryan Coogler, legacy cameos, and NBA players are considered.

Blake Griffin and Kenya Barris are said to be involved, and Michael B. Jordan is immediately proposed for the Sidney Dean-type role.
A participant begins from hatred of remakes but reverses after considering the dated references and a version with roughly twenty-five percent more basketball.
Reversing the outsider dynamic through rural America and using Billy Hoyle Jr. are proposed. The Billy Hoyle Jr. idea first receives a negative reaction; Miles Teller is then named, followed by an apparent reversal back into the idea, but the unlabeled machine transcript does not establish which participant gives either reaction. — Chris Ryan
Kenya Barris writing and Michael B. Jordan in the Snipes-type role draw an explicit statement of support from a participant who identifies as anti-remake.
The adjacent phrases 'Completely in' and 'I'm not going to watch that movie' are preserved as an ambiguous unlabeled exchange; the machine transcript does not establish a distinct dissenting speaker. — Chris Ryan
Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes are expected to return as legacy characters, while the film's dated but rewatchable quality supports modernization even though online video makes a present-day hustle harder. — Chris Ryan
Ryan Coogler directing with Michael B. Jordan is proposed as a darker, better-filmed and less comic version.
Miles Teller and Elgort are assessed for basketball ability as Billy Hoyle candidates; Elgort's dunking challenge is recalled, and the remake is expected to load pickup scenes with NBA cameos.

More from the conversation

The archive wrapper introduces Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Rembert Browne, calls White Men Can't Jump an unquestionable Sports Movie Hall of Fame selection, but only an honorable-mention or borderline Rewatchables Hall of Fame film.

Approx. transcript time · 00:00:41Read transcript

The first thirty-five to forty minutes are praised as exceptional, especially the nineteen-minute opening sequence, while the rest is said to depend on the viewer's response to Gloria. The basketball still feels real and the lesser-seen Los Angeles setting is strongly praised.

Approx. transcript time · 00:01:11Read transcript

Rembert Browne is invited into the conversation as the Venice opening is described. The speakers doubt the court culture is fully realistic but trace the clean plot beats from Billy's $62 scam through partnership and Sidney's double-cross.

Approx. transcript time · 00:03:31Read transcript

The sustained yo-mama exchange divides the panel between still-funny inventiveness and dated rhythm. Kadeem Hardison is credited through a cited oral history with helping popularize the form, while pre-internet Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson playground myths are recalled as impossible to verify.

Approx. transcript time · 00:04:51Read transcript

Wesley Snipes's path through Major League, New Jack City, and Spike Lee films is reviewed. White Men Can't Jump is proposed as perhaps his best film because it captures his likability, mystery, charisma, and credibility as a con man.

Approx. transcript time · 00:06:25Read transcript

Woody Harrelson's jump from Cheers is described as difficult because audiences knew him as Woody Boyd. Billy Hoyle lets him retain dorky charisma while playing darker, and the role is called his best performance.

Approx. transcript time · 00:07:47Read transcript

Harrelson's basketball is praised through Zach LaVine, Chase Budinger, Dirk Nowitzki, Marco Belinelli, and Draymond Green comparisons. Snipes's casual dunk and 360 layup are called improbable; Ed Norton's reverse two-handed dunk in American History X is placed at the top of the improbable-dunk scale. The film is still placed with Hoosiers among the best screen basketball until the final game.

Approx. transcript time · 00:09:53Read transcript

Billy's point-shaving debt and the Stuccis' accumulating vig are treated as an increasingly odd plot engine. Kadeem Hardison's first A Different World season is compared with a Michael Jordan-at-UNC foundation and his White Men Can't Jump appearance with a three-peat peak. His Sizzler exchange is singled out, followed by personal memories about the value of twenty or sixty dollars and school fights over yo-mama jokes.

Approx. transcript time · 00:13:40Read transcript

Rosie Perez and Gloria generate the episode's clearest disagreement. One participant says they are not a big Rosie Perez fan and finds her voice, screen time, and late-film usage difficult; another explicitly says they like Perez, calls her great in Do the Right Thing and amazing here, and describes her as formative. The buddy-movie preference is opposed by the view that Gloria's relationship plot makes the sports film unusual.

Approx. transcript time · 00:16:05Read transcript

A fake-stat metaphor compares Harrelson to an efficient Kevin Durant performance and Perez to a high-volume Jamal Crawford forced into forty-five minutes; her nude scenes are jokingly compared with a four-point play.

Approx. transcript time · 00:17:29Read transcript

The final forty minutes are called divisive, dark, low on basketball, and overcommitted to Jeopardy. The panel questions how Gloria enters, why she appears only once, and how far she advances; a Gloria-centered Jeopardy sequel is proposed.

Approx. transcript time · 00:19:08Read transcript

The movie is placed amid hip-hop's move into the mainstream through Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Native Tongues, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Public Enemy. Its humorous, direct treatment of race and the basketball culture of white-player comparisons are praised.

Approx. transcript time · 00:20:24Read transcript

Raymond is called the movie's funniest character and his confrontation a great sports-movie scene. The scene is recalled as Raymond returning to a car for a gun, trying to rob a liquor store, carrying a straight razor, becoming confused, and threatening to shoot everyone. Marcus Johnson's UCLA, Milwaukee, San Diego/Clippers history is discussed; he is compared with a better Paul Millsap and his stature is likened to Bernard King appearing in the role. When asked directly, Rembert Browne says he loves Rosie Perez and rejects the claim that her usage is excessive.

Approx. transcript time · 00:22:52Read transcript

Sidney's cat-and-biscuit saying and other poetic trash talk are celebrated, while his roofing, cable, painting, and basketball income streams prompt questions about the economics of pickup hustling.

Approx. transcript time · 00:24:45Read transcript

Ron Shelton's films led participants to idealize pickup hustling and minor-league catching. One participant reports hustling tennis opponents and doubles partners but not basketball; Sidney throwing the game is defended as a long-con tactic but also described as heartbreaking and dishonorable.

Approx. transcript time · 00:25:56Read transcript

Harrelson is judged much better at basketball than Snipes. Snipes's movements are theatrical, carried, and beautiful enough to support slow motion, while his double tank top, biker shorts, cap, and body are treated as iconic even as his actual play is criticized.

Approx. transcript time · 00:27:34Read transcript

Billy Hoyle's clothes are said to have influenced later Silver Lake style, while Sidney's look is considered harder to reproduce. Sidney's playing style and body are compared with Eric Bledsoe losing control, carrying, and throwing no-look passes. A Ray Lewis clubwear story and a report that Ringer video head Colin Orcutt dressed as Billy for Halloween extend the fashion discussion.

Approx. transcript time · 00:29:16Read transcript

Billy deliberately angers Sidney before the tournament because the greats supposedly play better angry. The 'I can hear Jimi' exchange is remembered as a high-school hallway and pickup-game reenactment staple; Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hrs. are named as earlier movie-scene comparators, alongside Chappelle's Show, In Living Color, and Saturday Night Live.

Approx. transcript time · 00:31:04Read transcript

Kadeem Hardison's later television appearance, A Different World's audience, and Dwayne Wayne's flipped glasses are discussed. Liking A Different World more than The Cosby Show is proposed as a sophisticated take.

Approx. transcript time · 00:33:12Read transcript

Billy is called a Hall of Fame bad gambler. One participant prefers movies where gambling pays off, citing Hardball's saving bet and Two for the Money, while another focuses on Billy's self-destruction and losses. Gloria's bottle prompts opposed explanations: possible hidden drinking versus stress from Billy and Jeopardy studying. The Stuccis' ability to find the couple and the chase plot are questioned. Gloria leaving after Billy breaks his promise is remembered as an unexpectedly adult ending rather than a temporary separation.

Approx. transcript time · 00:34:49Read transcript

White Men Can't Jump is unanimously called an exceptional sports-movie title and arguably one of the best titles ever. Its 1992 edge is connected to studio risk tolerance and the era's white-versus-Black basketball conversation; contemporary political-correctness speculation remains hypothetical.

Approx. transcript time · 00:36:24Read transcript

Harrelson's dunk reportedly used a nine-and-a-half-foot rim. A cited oral history is recalled as describing a set dominated by side bets and HORSE games. A David Blaine special in which a trick for Kanye West pans to Harrelson is offered as another example of his ever-present social persona, and his casting as Han Solo's mentor is described as receiving near-universal, immediate approval.

Approx. transcript time · 00:39:01Read transcript

Harrelson's post-film run lists Indecent Proposal, I'll Do Anything, The Cowboy Way, Natural Born Killers, Money Train, Kingpin, The People vs. Larry Flynt, True Detective, The Hunger Games, and No Country for Old Men. Wildcats is invoked to make White Men Can't Jump and Money Train an explicit Snipes-Harrelson trilogy. Matthew McConaughey is called a market correction who took some possible Harrelson roles without eliminating him, while Harrelson is praised for understanding his range.

Approx. transcript time · 00:40:07Read transcript

Snipes's sequence from Major League through Mo' Better Blues, New Jack City, Jungle Fever, The Waterdance, White Men Can't Jump, and Passenger 57 is reviewed, with direct positive reactions that he is really good in The Waterdance and that it is a good movie. The proposed Black-actor championship-belt discussion says Eddie Murphy held it before Snipes and later Denzel Washington and Will Smith; Harlem Nights has present-day fans, while another participant insists nobody liked it at the time. Denzel's Malcolm X, Philadelphia, and The Pelican Brief run is contrasted with Snipes's.

Approx. transcript time · 00:41:50Read transcript

One participant claims a personal Bone Collector corner and wants in whenever that film is discussed. Ricochet then receives an explicit positive reaction, with its Denzel Washington mustache called ideal.

Approx. transcript time · 00:43:47Read transcript

The panel wishes Snipes had a stronger post-1994 career and proposes alternate routes through ER, CSI, Morris Chestnut, Omar Epps, or Taye Diggs-style roles, while acknowledging his action-star choice and later personal problems.

Approx. transcript time · 00:44:00Read transcript

An unidentified participant tentatively proposes that Nino Brown may be more iconic than any non-biographical Denzel Washington character, while excluding Malcolm X and Steve Biko and repeatedly qualifying that they may not believe the claim. Other voices call it untrue but concede Nino Brown's cultural force and compare the idea with the character Denzel sought in American Gangster. Training Day, Remember the Titans, Man on Fire, Out of Time, Crimson Tide, Courage Under Fire, and The Siege are raised against the claim. The speakers dispute whether viewers remember the name Creasy, joke about a Proof of Life/Man on Fire hostage podcast, and say its first sixty-three episodes would concern David Caruso.

Approx. transcript time · 00:45:13Read transcript

A New Jack City ranking clearly places Judd Nelson first and later says Wesley Snipes is fourth; Chris Rock is floated at three, while Bill Cobbs and Ice-T appear in a rapid, shifting sequence whose exact remaining order cannot be resolved from the machine transcript. Nelson as the film's winner is called the speaker's worst take, prompting a joke about returning to New York.

Approx. transcript time · 00:47:34Read transcript

Snipes is described as increasingly confined to a 1990s legacy, while Ice-T's steady twenty-year television work is offered as a valuable contrasting model worthy of some Hall of Fame recognition.

Approx. transcript time · 00:48:43Read transcript

Tin Cup is explicitly named as a Ron Shelton film that worked, followed by the statement that Shelton has three perfect films. Bull Durham appears earlier in the episode and White Men Can't Jump is the film under discussion, so treating those as the other two is a contextual inference rather than a three-title list spoken together. Play It to the Bone and Cobb are said not to work, and the speakers wonder whether Shelton should have kept using the same formula.

Approx. transcript time · 00:49:31Read transcript

Creed is revisited as a possible competitor with Moneyball for best sports movie of the decade, with its long single-shot boxing scene praised. Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, and Ansel Elgort are assessed partly through basketball ability for the proposed remake.

Approx. transcript time · 00:53:18Read transcript

The closing genre argument calls the film a sports movie rather than a romantic comedy, followed by the counterclaim that the last forty minutes are a bleak romance closer to Kramer vs. Kramer or Ordinary People.
