More great songs

Van Lathan: A hottest take asks whether more great songs could elevate the film; the missing account of Tender Years’ release, commercial success and Frank’s role leads to a proposal to replace other material with the band’s rise.

Another take would delay the full On the Dark Side performance until after its creation, perhaps opening with Tender Years; the objection is that the existing opening immediately sells the band.

Writing On the Dark Side on the rooftop

In the discussion (8)
Approx. transcript time · 00:37:49Read transcript
  • Opening credits, On the Dark Side and Maggie’s newsroom pitch are scene candidates; her hook establishes the mystery and suggests a viewpoint the movie later shifts away from.
  • Frank meeting the band, Maggie visiting his classroom and the lounge-to-rooftop sequence are scene candidates; Eddie hears the value of Frank’s song before the rest of the group. — Bill Simmons
  • The rooftop’s instantly completed song is loved despite its implausibility, compared with Get Back’s slower creative process; Paré’s joy and Berenger’s physical performance sell the moment. — Bill Simmons
  • The lounge-to-Wild Summer Nights-to-Tender Years run is praised; Tender Years is a favorite non-Dark Side song and an enthusiastic audience extra is noticed.
  • Sal’s pizza-eating emotional scene and stage nostalgia receive praise; a Peter North effort award is proposed for Matthew Laurance’s commitment to a small part.
  • Wendell’s death into Tender Years and the disastrous Season in Hell session are scene candidates; the furious record executive and Eddie’s greatness-or-nothing stance are highlighted. — Bill Simmons
  • Writing On the Dark Side is the agreed most-rewatchable-scene choice. — Bill Simmons
  • The Palace of Depression flashback is another favorite because Eddie’s unraveling and other bandmates’ memories complicate Frank’s nostalgia. — Van Lathan
