  • The Ampipe Bulldogs, from American Pipe and Steel, comes first, and Vinny's desk trick has aged the best and the worst.
  • Brian announcing a honeymoon in Pittsburgh at an ordinary December Penguins Flyers game is called incredible, along with the 80s coaching stuff and the poster of Cruise in the letter jacket, whose tagline bangs you over the head.
  • The pep rally made a participant nostalgic for kids living in the moment with nobody on their phones, and for a coach's speech that now would be instantly on Instagram for the other team to see.
  • Bosco is called incredible, an evil Buddy Garrity and the perfect western Pennsylvania Steelers fan; his actor, Jim, directed Days of Our Lives while a participant was on it and was cool about the love scenes.
  • Jennifer Warnes's career was new to both: one participant had no idea despite being on the higher end of dumb pop culture knowledge, and the other knew nothing about it either, having thought her name was Jennifer Warren and that Jennifer Grey sang Time of My Life.
  • Jennifer Warnes won an Oscar in 1979 for a song in Norma Rae, was nominated in 81 for Ragtime, and sang Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong with Joe Cocker, an Oscar, a Grammy and a number one hit.
  • She also sang this movie's theme in 83, the Growing Pains theme in 1985, called one of the two best sitcom themes with Family Ties, and Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing in 1987, for three Oscars and two Grammys over nine years.

  • Tunnel of Love is the clear needle-drop choice, with Treat Me Right a strong runner-up; Joe Cocker’s song is excluded because it plays over the closing credits. — Bill Simmons
  • A proposed awards principle would exclude songs heard only over credits, while integrating a song into the score is admired.
Sleepless in Seattle

What’s Aged the Best?

  • Keeping the romantic leads apart until the end is an aged-best structural choice. — Bill Simmons
  • Reiner's dopey, sarcastic supporting presence makes a strong impact in only two scenes. — Bill Simmons
  • Becky's repeated silent reactions to Walter are an aged-best comic detail. — Bill Simmons
  • Jonah's backhanded thanks for unusually cooked potatoes is praised as a perfectly childish insult. — Bill Simmons
  • A YouTube horror recut treating Annie as a murderous stalker is enthusiastically recommended. — Bill Simmons
  • Victoria's excessive laugh is admired as a comic conception, although the performance and character provoke disagreement. — Bill Simmons
  • The number-one soundtrack is praised, naming Jimmy Durante, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Carly Simon, Gene Autry, Joe Cocker, Harry Connick Jr., Tammy Wynette and Celine Dion. — Bill Simmons
  • Ryan's dresses and trench coat preserve a very 1993 look that can count as both best and worst; Annie Hall influence and a speculative AIDS-era aversion to revealing clothing are discussed. — Bill Simmons
  • Seattle's water, Pike Place and houseboat are aged-best choices; the airy light wood, round stair window and bathroom are especially admired, while the houseboat's mobility is questioned. — Juliet Litman
  • Annie's investigation anticipates modern internet stalking; her extensive results with limited 1993 resources are admired while hiring a private investigator goes too far.
  • Radio intimacy and parasocial attachment have aged well as evidence that people talking remains compelling content. — Amanda Dobbins
  • Drinks rather than dinner remains an effective first-date strategy because it allows a quick exit.
  • Movie references to Fatal Attraction, Pride of the Yankees and An Affair to Remember remain legible rather than dating the comedy. — Juliet Litman
  • Annie briefing Walter on sensitive family topics, including financial losses and the IRS, remains a convincing social detail. — Juliet Litman

  • It was hard to come up with more than three candidates. The first is Forrest playing football, with a clip, and a tangent on Forrest as a kick returner against Devin Hester and Desmond Howard: he has no escapability, runs in a straight line and turns left like a car, so Alabama's blocking schemes deserve credit, and he is dubbed the best white kick returner ever.
  • There are only two football scenes and a host could have watched a hundred; Bear Bryant's reaction when Forrest breaks one is loved. One host did not know the coach was meant to be Bear Bryant on first viewing, the hat now gives it away; Alabama football was down when the film came out and is back, and the school was a smart choice because it carried Bear Bryant and the integration material.
  • A second favorite is the scene in which Forrest's first intimate moment with Jenny ends abruptly, which one host and his friends imitated at bars for the rest of the nineties; it is given a zero percent chance of being the pick.
  • The Vietnam rally crowd was built with about 1,500 extras who were filmed on one side, moved to the other side and composited so it looked like 35,000 people.
  • The rally is fantastic: the fake Abby Hoffman (as transcribed) saying 'Forrest' very sharply, then the two running through the pool to meet each other feels like an iconic movie moment, and one host calls it the best scene in the movie.
  • Forrest getting rich while Jenny comes back is a great four-minute montage, with the lawn mowing and the bought church. The running scene is called appalling but its music choices are incredible, Jackson Brown's (as transcribed) Running on Empty straight into Bob Seeger's (as transcribed) Against the Wind, very late seventies; Zemeckis loves the obvious musical cue, as with Joe Cocker's Feeling Alright in Flight when Denzel falls off the wagon, and only Scorsese is worse.
  • Forrest meeting his son, with the exchange about the boy being named after his daddy, is a great, touching scene; Haley Joel Osment is incredible at about two years old. The meeting, the wedding and Lieutenant Dan's arrival can be lumped together.
  • One host picks the Vietnam rally as the best scene; the other agrees, offers the hurricane with Lieutenant Dan going to war on top of the mast as a fun candidate he had forgotten, and goes with the rally too. The film has no knock-your-socks-off scenes like Shawshank's opera scene, but the rally is pretty good.
  • The football scene connects directly to the previous scene where Forrest learns to run, so it is less individuated than scenes in other movies. 'Run, Forrest, run' with little Jenny and the braces breaking off is a candidate but short; the principal sleeping with Sally Field so Forrest can stay in school is funny but was hesitated over, and the first-encounter scene is not getting any votes.
